The Woodlands is a huge master-planned community and census-designated place in the beautiful state of Texas. The Woodlands itself wasn’t established until 1974; it’s located in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Not unlike most smaller cities around Houston, it was started originally by an oil magnate and investor. His name was George P. Mitchell, and in 1974 the town was founded as an extension of Mitchell Energy and Development. The original plans for the city are surprisingly close to today’s reality, with plans for a conference center, hotels, office parks, distribution centers, golf courses and a range of houses from affordable to luxurious.
By 2000, a humungous amount of corporate office space was under construction, and even today there is still a large number of new buildings under construction. Primarily, The Woodlands is home to national and multi-national corporations who value the serenity and wide sprawling land that the area has to offer, with competitive prices when compared to Houston.
In recent years, ExxonMobile has notably moved its Houston campus to The Woodlands, with over 10,000 employees migrating to the area from the previous Downtown location.
